QUT BLUEBOX TO GIVE SCHOOL STUDENTS OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT ROBOTICS WITH A BATTLE STYLE COMPETITION

QUT bluebox is giving schools across Queensland the opportunity to learn more about robotics with the QUT bluebox Robot Rumble, a free workshop open to students from grades 7-9, and their teachers.

QUT bluebox, Chief Entrepreneur-in-Residence Dr Tim MacTaggart said the Robot Rumble forms part of the QUT bluebox Robotics Accelerator initiative, supported by Advance Queensland and Japanese multinational company Softbank.

Dr MacTaggart said that although the accelerator is aimed at robotics startups in Queensland, it is important that the program is influential in growing the robotics ecosystem in Queensland.

“It is important to support the growing interest in robotics here in Queensland – and important to support the budding roboticists in school now.

“A crucial component of the Robot Rumble is that each team includes two students and one teacher, giving teachers across Queensland further training and knowledge in modern robotics they may not otherwise get, while still providing a fun environment for the students.

“The workshop will give students an understanding of robotics in the modern world and develop a stronger understand of programming and computational thinking, by teaching them how to program a robot for the competition.

“It is very hands-on and a lot of fun so there will be no bored kids,” Dr MacTaggart said.

One principal who welcomes the opportunity to enter a team is Windaroo Valley State High School Principal, Mr Leonard McKeown.

“This competition provides a unique opportunity for students to learn new skills, work collaboratively and have fun. “It also creates a terrific situation for teachers to learn and share together.

“Robotics is a very popular subject at Windaroo, we look forward to learning more and hopefully taking out the competition!” Mr McKeown said.

Schools can register teams at www.qutbluebox.com.au/robotrumble, the finalist teams will be chosen for the free workshop on 7 June 2018.
