Guest speaker: Cheryl McCaffrey
Cheryl is a graduate of the University of NSW with an Honours degree in Science and the University of Melbourne with a Master of Business Administration and a Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law. She is also a registered patent attorney. After graduating from UNSW, Cheryl worked for eight years as a scientist undertaking research in areas having bio-medical application. When she recognised the need for scientifically-qualified people to become involved in management and, in particular, the management of the commercialisation of research outcomes, Cheryl switched to the "business of science". She completed her MBA and joined a start-up biotechnology company as its IP Manager. Over the ensuing 18 years, she has been involved in every aspect of managing the protection and exploitation of research outcomes:
- seeking and gaining IP rights for inventions in many countries of the world;
- contracting the further development of protected inventions;
- dealing with IP rights via licensing agreements;
- establishing start-up companies around IP rights, and
- developing and marketing finished products that are protected by IP rights.
Before leaving Australia, Cheryl was the Commercial Director for the Molecular Plant Breeding CRC. She currently resides in Singapore where she is Deputy Director of the Industry Development Group for the Biomedical Sciences Institutes. The role of this Group is primarily to foster collaborative arrangements among organisations wanting to build expertise in the commercialisation of bioscience research so as to help develop a bioscience industry for the benefit of Singaporeans.
